Witchfire: I’m Making It Up As I Go Along

A D&D3E Adventure.

Ever have one of those red herrings the characters just have to dive into full force and no matter how you try to persuade to back on the path they just keep trudging on?

Cast of Characters:

  • Devon the Wanderer - Human Monk (Shelby)
  • Oswin Morror - Human Fighter (Peyton)
  • Georgia Buttons - Halfling Rogue (Bailey)
  • Thamier Liadon - Elven Ranger (Darryl)
  • Lehtias Skylyre - Half-Elf Druid (Erin)

Our heroes fresh from battle with the wererats, when there was an explosion over head and the house collapsed on itself. A beam fell on Darren Thorngage and knocked him unconscious. He is down for the count and pinned by the beam. Lehtias makes sure he is okay and not bleeding out and the party decides to go forth. Georgie Buttons volunteers to stay behind and tend to Darren.

The rest of the party proceeds down the passageway with Oswin taking the lead, followed by Thamier, than Lehtias and Devon bringing up the rear. The passage ends at wall, as Oswin steps forward she discovered she stepped on a pressure plate, she steps off. That’s when Devon get’s a spear to the side. He’s impaled to the wall, meanwhile cursing Oswin out like a bat out of hell. Thamier goes to help her, he takes her down and gives her a potion of healing.

Georgia Buttons runs down the hallway, she heard Devon scream like a little japanese school girl in a horror film. She had tossed some light debris on Darren so that he wouldn’t be discovered. Georgia disables the trap and the party moves on. They find a secret door and open it.

They find a weretiger waiting for them (I guess the trap being set and the Devon’s scream alerted her). She has two short swords and proceeds to attack. The battle is short and sweet the weretiger guard was no match for Oswin. They enter a storage room where casks wine.

Going through another door they open up to find a huge pool room which is used to bathe as well, with benches, coat hooks and two other doors leading out. They open another door and discover another storage room but this time with crates. Thamier goes in to investigate and hears the sound of something breathing, down in a corner is a huge dire rat sleeping, Thamier is about to get a surprise attack and then he sneezed. The dire rat awakes and Georgia goes running down to help him. Meanwhile, the rest of the party hears splash from the pool to see a fish like being emerge, he stands there and looks at the Oswin, Devon and Lehtias and decides he better go and dives back into the pool. Georgia and Thamier finish off the dire rat.

The party looks into the pool and see that it goes ten feet down at one end and see a portal closing, they decide to deal with the situation when the time comes and proceed to the other door.

The door opens up with what used to be the acolyte room, to find that it is now a wererat haven, though since a large number of the beasts have been killed off by the party members there are only a few remaining and the heroes make quick work of that. They search the bunks and tables and pick up items and trinkets, and as they do so a huge Ogre bursts through the door at the other end of the room. He is ticked that the party killed his friends and he rages on them. The Ogre has a neck brace and has a club (sadly it’s a table leg) he hurts a few party members before he is taken down for the count.

The enter a room with a huge bed, with stairs leading up and a desk, table and cabinets (all having been looked through). Except for a chest which they found hidden underneath the stairs, it contains robes, a pitre a small box (with coins, gems and rings. All collection booty). Before they proceed upwards to the church.

As they enter they see a lot of pews piled up along the far wall and three catapults and a huge ballista in the space where the empty pews where. There Mr. Morrigon and two other fellows are looking over their inventory. Surprised to see the party still alive after all the minions they could muster for their cause. They proceed to do battle. And it’s a long hard fought battle with arrows flying, spells casting, bullets flying as well (since Morrigon was firing an arquebus!). In the end the heroes finally take down the trio and at this time the cavalry arrive!

Town watch who were called to the Morrigon residence due to the explosion have been digging around and uncovered Darren Thorngage in the rubble in the basement he tells them off what had happened. And, they happen to hear a shot of some kind coming from this abandoned temple and proceed to investigate. The party are greeted as heroes and  proceed to head back to the Temple of Morrow to lick their wounds.

Game On!!!

Game ON!

It’s Saturday and you know what that means! Game Night.

The Sleep Spell

I had a player who would tear up his character sheet if everyone fell under a sleep spell. No matter what the situation was; he just presumed his character was coud de grace. He didn’t like having his equipment taken away and awaken in prison or on a slave ship. He just tore up his character sheet to the annoyance of others and spent the rest of the night making a new character.

It got to the point where the other players didn’t want to play with him anymore.

Witchfire: Wererats In The Sewers

A Side Trek Adventure for D&D E

Cast of Characters:

  • Darren Thorngage - Halfling Rogue (Michael)
  • Devon the Wanderer - Human Monk (Shelby)
  • Oswin Morror - Human Fighter (Peyton)

When we last left of the party made it to Corvis city, having made it through the city to the Church of Morrow. Were Gunner (the caravan leader) was dropping off some goods to Father Pandor Dumas. Gunner introduces our mercenaries to the good father who has a proposition for them.  Georgia Buttons, Thamier Liadon, Lehtias Skylyre and Oswin Morrow decide to rest up first and they can listen to what Father Dumas has to offer. He has his staff set up some cells for the party to rest for the evening and they can talk about this task in the morning. Thamier, Lehtias and Georgia take the offer, but want to quench their thirst for the evening and Gunner takes them to a tavern nearby, The Peg & The Peach. Oswin says she will meet up with them later but wants to rest and wash up before heading out.

On the way to the Peg & The Peach, Oswin notices something moving in the shadows of an alleyway and decides to check it out. As she crosses the street she pumps into Devon the Wanderer who was marveling at the architecture of the city. Devon had just arrived in the city as well. They look at each other and appears to have started a fight, when a bolt from the alleyway hits Devon square in the back. It just so happens that Darren (the halfling) was standing nearby and notices this happens as well. He runs over to Devon to see if he is okay. While, Oswin makes a beeline for the alleyway. There she sees three humanoid forms, standing over a grating: They are Wererats!

Darren removes the bolt from Devon’s back and both head to the alleyway to see what is going on. A fight ensues and Oswin and her new found “friends” are victorious. While searching the remains of the wererats who slowly morph back into their human forms, they hear a voice from the sewer “What’s taking so long. Hurray up and get the meat!”.

Darren, Devon and Oswin decide to go down and see how many wererats are there and discover six more. They do battle slaying four while two of the wererats run off. While searching the wererats they discover on of them has a backpack with a bust in it. They hear low growl in the sewers but decide to head back to the surface to get some healing. Though, as they climb up to the grating they came down from they can hear the town watch standing over the bodies of the wererats and wondering what happened. Our party decides to come up elsewhere.

Once on the surface, Oswin takes them to the Temple of Morrow where clerics tend to their wounds. They also make a donation to the church and decide to see what they can do about their items they pilfered from the wererats. When they show the bust they got, the merchants recognizes it as the one that is in the library of Corvis. The PC’s decide to let the merchant take it back to the library for them. Our heroes decide to head back down into the sewer to investigate the growling sounds. The tunnels are old and ancient and they discover a huge crocodile in the sewers and do battle; also discovering an section of the wall had fallen to reveal a lot bathing area of a club with a pool and a statue of a woman holding a basis that pours water, and finally an old crypt were an old wizard was buried and they battle the skeleton warriors that animated when the PC’s enter.

Battered and bruised and clinging to life, our heroes take bounty they discovered and head back to the surface to get some rest.

Our heroes venture down an alleyway to discover a group of Wererats who’ve just raided a temple of knowledge.

Motley Crew’d

Last night was a rag-tag motley crew of an adventure since three of my regular players were away from the table (due to unforeseeable events, a family gathering, etc…) Which left one regular player, and a new old player had moved home for the summer rejoined the group, I also added a new new player the group as wel (he hadn’t play a role playing game and really, really wanted to play one).

I couldn’t continue on with the Witchfire adventure so I threw in a little side trek quest. It went pretty well.

Creating a Monk.

Playing D&D 3e tonight. Recruited a fresh face for the table: Mike.

The Tomb of Errata

So last night, after a little discussion with a player, I decided to download the errata for Dungeons & Dragons 3rd edition PHB just for the hell of it and see what I was missing in these little corrections/adjustments that were overlooked when it was printed. I glanced through the errata and there were a slew of tiny changes; telling what to omit and what to pencil into the rule book. And, I could understand why my player wanted me to download the errata for a rule on a specific subject. I, as a GM, went with my gut. I wasn’t going to pause a game just to check an errata and that’s why I waited til the session was over before doing research on the ‘net.

And that’s why the Gods invented house rules; since the rules are just guidelines to follow and what didn’t make sense or seemed omitted was improvised. I really don’t mind improvising and what not since the best part of gaming is the storytelling; opening up the theatre of the mind and drawing the players into the realm. I presume it’s just one of the reasons why 3.5 was released which corrected and tidied up some, though I didn’t purchased it when it did.

I explained before I was fine and happy with AD&D though my players had wanted to take that step up in the 3E and had pooled together and bought the three core rulebooks for me. God bless ‘em.

So, last night characters were generated for the 3E system; players decided what race they wanted to play and picked a template and away we went.
